The rest of the town wasn’t too far away, just as Selena predicted. It was the largest section of the cave they’d seen, almost canyon-like. They walked through a flat open area, surrounded by mountainous peaks and crevices. Their helmet lights revealed the faces of buildings lining the hills around them—quiet ancient structures, splintered wooden walls, windows that were cracked or clouded with dust.

“What a ghost town…” Selena said, examining the structures. It was like a graveyard of houses.

“They look so lonely…” Lauren said.

“What does?”

“The houses. They’re so colorless and old. So alone down here. It’s kind of sad.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Trent said. “The people who lived down here died a very long time ago.”

“Why are all the buildings intact?” Selena asked.

Trent wasn’t following her. He shined his lights across a row of small rickety buildings. “What do you mean?”

“If this town was swallowed by an earthquake these buildings would have been demolished,” she said. “I could believe one or two might have survived the fall. But all of them? It’s not plausible.”

“Maybe somebody put them back together,” Lauren said.

“Who?”

Lauren shrugged. “The ones who survived the earthquake. I’m sure some of the townspeople weren’t around when the ground swallowed the buildings. Maybe they came down here and built this as a memorial to the people they lost.”

“If this was a memorial then how come nobody’s ever heard of it before?” Selena said. “You’d think this would be a huge part of the local legend. It would also be a pretty big tourist attraction.”

“Maybe the people who constructed it wanted to keep it a secret,” Lauren said.

Trent stepped between them to end the conversation.

“We should search the buildings,” he said. “See if there’s anything useful here.”

“Like what?” Selena said.

“Anything we can use,” he said. “Maps, ropes, fuel, weapons.”

“Weapons?”

“If we’re down here long enough we might have to start hunting pig,” Trent said. Then he turned to the others. “Split up. I don’t want to spend all day here.”
